Dr. Scott Meyer has been a ceramic artist for over twenty years. He was first introduced to that medium at Penn State where he studied within the strict discipline afforded by Japanese wheel throwing tradition. Under Kenneth Beittel he evolved a simultaneous interest in the methods with which tradition is passed from one to another and the role of place in the life of imagination. This dual focus produced a Ph. D. in Art Education in 1985. More important to his current work, it fostered a relationship between tradition and pervasive truth that continues to propel his approach to materials. With one foot planted in each world, he has found the land between to be supportive and evocative. His work has appeared in numerous national venues including galleries in New York City, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Texas, and Birmingham. He has been included in a long list of juried national exhibitions including Art Quest International Competition (award of merit), San Angelo National (award of merit), the Florida National, The Meridian Competition (best of show purchase award), and Clay! A National Juried Invitational. He has shown and lectured in university galleries, museums and art centers such as Auburn University, Ohio Weslian University, School for American Crafts at Rochester Institute of Technology, Northern Illinois University, the Archie Brey Foundation for Ceramic Art, Geroette Studio 8, Curacao, Neth. Ant. as well as lecturing and demonstrating at the National Council for Education in Ceramic Art Conference, the Southeast College Art Association Conference, and the Alabama Clay Conference. He has published articles in most of the international magazines for ceramic art including Ceramics Monthly, Ceramics Art and Perception (Australia), the NCECA Journal, Clay Times, and Ceramics Magazine (Taiwan) as well as Maquette magazine of the International Sculpture Association. He also authored the forward, “Completing the Circle”, for the book on the ceramic art of Richard Hirsch. Dr. Meyer has received the University Scholar Award for outstanding creative achievement as well as the College of Fine Arts Distinguished Teacher Award from the University of Montevallo where he is currently professor of art. He has also been recognized twice in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. He has received numerous university grants for his creative work and has just been awarded the Alabama State Council on the Arts Fellowship for Excellence in Visual Arts. He has traveled extensively in the United States researching wood firing kiln strategies with ceramic artists such as Jack Troy, Peter Callas, Rob Barnard, and Warren Frederick. His own pioneering work in kiln design has produced the first anagama kiln in the state and the only such kiln in the country built and fired by undergraduate students. Dr. Meyer’s students have gone on to advanced study in many of the world’s finest ceramics institutions including Alfred, Ohio University, The School for American Crafts at R.I.T., and U. Mass. Dartmouth. Two have taken special one and two year apprenticeships with Mr. Jeroemon Fujita, designated Prefecture Living Treasure in Japan. |
